Yes, if by influential you mean "negative" influence on life, society, and the world then I would agree with you.

I agree that St. Augustine was one of the most influential Catholics, and saints for that matter, of all time. Nevertheless, he did believe that people who engaged in the literature, drama, philosophy, politics, etc. of that time were indeed preventing themselves from entering into the "City of God." Before embracing the Faith and making it his own, he went through 3 years of struggle and spent much time studying philosophy, Neo-Platonism, and skepticism. Some may consider him to be one who "held back" the Enlightenment period causing a big rift in the acceptance of religions, faith, and scripture. However, I have to give him credit. Had he not done that, had he not attempted to go against the grain, it may have never prompted Aquinas to resolve the issues nor lead to his powerful conversion. St. Thomas Aquinas, another mastermind and revolutionary of the Faith, even said, "that for the knowledge of any truth whatsoever man needs divine help, that the intellect may be moved by God to its act." Therefore, I really do not consider him a "douche" (whatever that means) but, like you said, an INFLUENTIAL Catholic of our time.

Quite simply Augustine was the most influential Catholic of his time. One of his "doctrines" (for lack of a better term) dealt with his belief on the "City of Man" and the "City of God" (or as we'd probably call it... Heaven and Earth). And it is indeed because it is an age "of faith" that it become the dark ages. Augustine, to make it simple, believed that people who engaged in things that he would consider "The City of Man" were removing themselves from God's Grace and would not enter into the "City of God." Now while that included all the "sins" we know about it, Augustine also stated that literature, drama, philosophy, politics, etc were are examples of things that are the realm of the "city of man." There is a reason why during this time period there is a serious lack of Western learning, literature, art, etc. In addition the "divine right of kings" is never challenged and any attempt of liberalizing politics is held back for a century. Aquinas helps resolved this issue in his works. There's a reason why the scientific revolution, the renaissance and the enlightenment come after Aquinas lays down his philosophy. So yeah, that's why he is a douche. J Raz, I know. That's why I said "western" civilization. There is a reason why in your Art History class, the emphasis during this time shifts to the Islamic world.

Viva la Revolucion, next year is 200 years (1810-2010)!!!!! I say this keeping in mind most people who think they are revolutionaries today are ones who really can't get outside of their own box..."the strong move quiet, the weak start riots"

i like your idea Melinda. but im thinking, since they used the word "older" and not "wiser" and just in general society's connotation of the word "older" is negative -- i think its actually saying... to in fact, yes, bring your childhood with you, so that you won't get older-- so that you remain the free spirit that you were during your youth, before life's hardships built barriers, when everything you touched, felt, smelled, and loved and was so fresh and so pure. we often reconnect with our childhood emotions-- its something all nations and all religions speak of-- the pureness of a child and of a child's soul. its one of the few times in life, where we are happy without distractions, without motives... where rollerblading down the hill was meant for just that, to have fun. no fear. everyone always says, "think back to your childhood and remember what you wanted to be..." because we weren't swayed by public opinion or others... we were swayed by passion, love, and the enthusiasm within ourselves. remember? generally, in literature, poems, scriptures, or translation, ones childhood is ones best moments. so perhaps, we should leave our "childish ways" as in stomping your feet, complaining, whining, etc behind us, but our childhood... that, you should keep in your heart forever: see things wholesome, equally and lovely.

I think you can interpret it two ways, but I see it as when you're growing old some people have to put aside their childish ways. What do you think?

This organization is founded solely to empower all those who suffer from homelessness and homeless conditions. I did watch "The Soloist" the other day and it still amazes me how much poverty still exists on Los Angeles' Skid Row. Yes, there are shelters and services provided, but only about a small percentage of them actually step foot inside the shelters seeking help, let alone keep up with the demands/responsibilities they have to do in order to stay there. It's a complicated process and, on top of that, they have drug testing every time you enter. Do you really think that people are willing to sacrifice their drugs and alcohol when it's so freely available right outside on the streets? I think it's very unlikely.

What does it really mean to be homeless? In many ways, I think and believe we are ALL suffering in some way.

This was right outside of LAMP, the shelter for homeless with mental illness. It was an amazing experience meeting him. Jamie Fox, from the movie about him "The Soloist", did a pretty good job, I must say.
